WHAT WE DO

The Mayport Council of the Navy League of the United States has over 550 members in the greater Jacksonville and Amelia Island area. As a US Navy League council, we uphold the mission and objectives of the national organization, which are listed above, through the adoption and support of various military units here in Northeast Florida . Below is a sample of activities of the Mayport Navy League:

bullet

Each Mayport ship returning from extended deployment is met by several members of the Mayport council and each spouse and child is given a small US flag to wave.  The smiles and appreciation that we receive is priceless.

bullet

Mayport Council members help the local Mayport USO serve “No Dough” dinners – free for service members and their families. These are wonderful people and they all are so appreciative of the USO and the Navy League support.

bullet

The Mayport Council provides significant support to the annual Sailor/Marine and Coast Guardsman of the Year. Volunteers from your council solicit some really wonderful gifts from the community which are presented at the May dinner meeting at the Naval Station Mayport.

bullet

The Mayport NL provides support for fleet picnics at Mayport. The last major effort was the All Hands picnic in honor of the Sailors from all the countries participating in the 50th annual UNITAS exercise with the other navies from the Americas .

Along with other NLUS Councils in the northeast part of Florida , the Mayport Council supports the luncheons which honor the Individual Augmentees (IA) and their families. IA’s are Sailors who have been selected from their unit to make an individual deployment to Iraq , Afghanistan or some similar place. Our Sailors are taking the duties of Marines and Army Soldiers so that the Marines and Soldiers can carry the fight to the enemy – as they were trained to do. Our Sailors pick up guard duties on major public utilities, construction projects hospital and field medical augmentation, etc.

Youth programs are a key activity of the Mayport NL Council. The annual dues help to support the local Sea Cadet and Navy League Cadets and their activity as well as support for NROTC Cadets. This investment that you make is in our future leaders – last year, one of the graduating Sea Cadets earned an appointment to the Coast Guard Academy ! Our Sea Cadets are sharp Sailors – they make you proud of your investment!

Mayport Navy League dinners are held the 3rd Thursday of the month at the Conference Center (old Officers Club) on the Mayport Naval Station. We are fortunate to have a wide range of speakers on issues affecting the Sea Services and our local community support of the Sea Services. $25 for a dinner of fine Prime Rib (there is an option entrée every time), some good conversation with folks who have a similar interest and a chance to get some good information on the Sea Services from one of the “horses mouths” is a great opportunity. If you are not attending, you miss the opportunity to interact with some interesting people, hear a great speaker (not too long!) and see our Sea Cadets in action as the color guard.

The Mayport Council sponsors a “no host” informal (no program and shorts are just fine) mixer on the second Wednesday of every month – 5:30 to 7:30 PM. We are now meeting at a Community Affiliate Navy League supporter establishment. Come join us for a cool glass of what ever makes you happy!

OUR OBJECTIVE

bullet

To foster and maintain interest in a strong Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine as integral parts of a sound national defense and vital to the freedom of the United States.

bullet

To serve as a means of educating and informing the American people with regard to the role of sea power in the nuclear age and the problems involved in maintaining strong defenses in that age.

bullet

To improve the understanding and appreciation of those who wear the uniforms of our armed forces and to better the conditions under which they live and serve.

bullet

To provide support and recognition for the Reserve forces in our communities in order that we may continue to have a capable and responsive Reserve.

bullet

To educate and train our youth in the customs and traditions of the Navy, the Marine Corps, the Coast Guard and the Merchant Marine through the means of an active and vigorous Naval Sea Cadet Corps.

The Navy League of the United States was founded in 1902 with the encouragement of President Theodore Roosevelt. The Navy League is unique among military-oriented associations in that it is a civilian organization dedicated to the education of our citizens, including our elected officials, and the support of the men and women of the sea services and their families. The objective and purpose of the Navy League is educational and motivational. We must acquire and display before the citizens of our country information as to the conditions of our naval and maritime forces. We must awaken interest and support in all matters which aid our maritime capabilities. To this end, the Navy League works closely with the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and US-flag Merchant Marine through a network of over 330 councils in the United States and around the world. The Navy League has nearly 75,000 active members.

The Navy League supports America's young people through its youth programs, including sponsorship of the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps, the Navy League Scholarship Program, and the Samuel Eliot Morison Essay Contest. Individual councils are also involved in promoting youth-oriented activities in their communities such as NJROTC, MCJROTC, and ROTC units along with other recognized youth programs. Local councils and national headquarters provide over $25,000 scholarships and awards every year. Navy League councils support active duty military personnel through "adoption" of ships, installations, and units; commissioning ceremonies; award programs; and other recognition programs.

Over the years, the Navy League has compiled an impressive record of accomplishments. Today the Navy League is widely respected by citizens, community and industrial leaders, and public officials. Navy League programs are welcomed in communities throughout the nation, and members are recognized for their integrity and patriotism.

"It seems to me that all good Americans interested in the growth of their country and sensitive to its honor, should give hearty support to the policies which the Navy League is founded to further. For the building and maintaining in proper shape of the American Navy, we must rely on nothing but the broad and farsighted patriotism of our people as a whole." Theodore Roosevelt...
