Onboard USS NEW YORK

In February the USS FREEDOM (LCS-1) a new class of fighting warship made a port call to Mayport Naval Station. Freedom is the first of the Navy's new Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) designed to operate close to shore and to be outfitted with a variety of mission packages.

Members of Mayport Council Navy League of the United States had the privilege of take a tour of the ship while she was in port.

Attached is a photo of the President of the Mayport Council, Diane Wright with the Captain of USS FREEDOM, CMDR James R. Garner. Diane gave him from the Mayport Council a copy of NAVY LEAGUE of the UNITED STATES, Civilians Supporting the Sea Services ...for more than a Century.

The Navy League of the United States is a civilian organization dedicated to informing the American people and their government that the United States of America is a maritime nation and that our national defense and economic well being are dependent upon strong sea services --United States Nay, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and U.S.-flag Merchant Marine.

Juan M. Garcia III, assistant secretary of the Navy, Manpower and Reserve Affairs, left presented William F.McLoughlin with the Navy Meritorious Public Service Award during the October Annual Convention of the Navy League of the United States.

Mr. McLoughlin was honored for his service with the Mayport Council and the National Navy League.

The Navy League of the United States will hold their Annual Convention in 2010 in Jacksonville.
